Not new, but Powerful

28 02 2008

I’ve seen this done a number of times by a number of churches….this one is one of the best.

Random Thoughts on a Thursday

28 02 2008
  • My wife Mary is an amazing mom
  • American Idol is a disappointment thus far
  • I’m looking forward to Lost tonight
  • If you are in or near Crofton, you must check out Mi Casita. It’s my new spot!
  • Grant is almost walking!
  • Lincoln is looking older and older every day (where does the time go?)
  • I love doing life and ministry with the Ott’s
  • I can barley talk right now, and I’m speaking this weekend!
  • It’s good to see Jonathan Falwell making some changes at Thomas Roads Baptist Church. It’s definitely not my style (choirs with robes, everyone in a suit, old guys sitting on the stage when Jonathan is speaking), but it seems he’s got an idea of where he wants to take that church. More power to ya Jonathan!

10 Easy Ways to Make your Church Service More Boring

28 02 2008

  1. Don’t worry about when you finish. I’m sure no one has plans after the service.
  2. Straight Scriptures. No stories. Jesus didn’t teach that way, but you’re a better communicator than Jesus, right?
  3. Television. Movies. It’s just a phase. People don’t really need visual stimulation. They prefer talking heads.
  4. Use the same service order…every week…no exceptions…ever.
  5. Make more announcements.
  6. Never include the kids….you know kids make evrything boring!
  7. Talk more about the past and the less about the future.
  8. Play the same Chris Tomlin song every week. And, try the chorus one more time.
  9. Use lots of big words that no one uses in normal, everyday life.
  10. Forget relevant topics and life application. People are really only interested in hearing what you think, not why it matters to them.

Here’s an extra for you…..pray a good long 20 minute prayer with lots of thee’s and thou’s

We are really working at The Journey Church to make our services more exciting/interesting. We struggle with the order of service being different though. It’s so easy to get stuck in that routine. If you’re a member at Journey, expect some shake ups to the order of service soon! We want to become a church that people can’t wait to get to because they are never sure what we’re going to do!

The Secure Leader

28 02 2008

Mark Batterson, pastor of National Community Church recently blogged about a session he taught at a recent conference on, “The Secure Leader“. Here’s what he wrote…

This morning I’m doing a session at the Evolve Conference titled The Secure Leader. I’m going to use Saul as a case study in insecurity. Two verses represent two defining moments in his life.

I Samuel 14:35: “And Saul built an altar to God; the first one he had ever built.” So far so good. Saul is building altars to God. But fast-forward one chapter. I Samuel 15:12 says, “Saul went up to Carmel to build a monument to himself.” Somewhere between those two verses, Saul stopped building altars to God and started building monuments to himself. There is a fine line between Thy Kingdom Come and My Kingdom Come. At some point, it was no longer about God. It was about Saul.

Here are seven habits of secure leaders:

1) Don’t play the comparison game.

No one wins! Comparison either leads to pride or jealousy!

2) Success isn’t numbers

Saul got caught up in the numbers game. And David had better stats. Listen, if my children grow up to love God and everything else falls apart I’m successful. But if NCC grows to 50,000 people and I sell 10,000,000 books it means nothing if my family falls apart. Jesus was successful because he poured his life into twelve people!

3) Celebrate your failures.

Insecure people are afraid of failing. Secure people laugh at themselves. They celebrate failure because it accentuates what God can do inspite of us!

4) Don’t panic

Saul panics when his men start scattering so he makes a sacrifice instead of waiting for Samuel. Insecure people get nervous. They give up. Secure leaders hang in there no matter what.

5) Don’t get defensive

How you handle criticism will make you or break you. You need tough skin and a soft heart. If you’re insecure your defense mechanisms will get the best of you. So instead of leading out of imagination you’ll lead out of insecurity.

6) Surround yourself with the right people

Who was Saul’s greatest asset? David. But if you are insecure, your greatest asset will become your greatest threat. And it will short-circuit your ability to surround yourself with a great team. And it will limit your influence.

7) Keep building altars to God

God often uses us at our point of insecurity because then He gets all the credit. I pray for the favor of God as much as anything else because I want God to do things for me that I cannot do for myself. And every time we experience God’s blessing we need to build an altar. That’s why we named our coffeehouse Ebenezers: hitherto the Lord has helped me. The blessings of God either turn into pride or praise.

Are you building altars to God or monuments to yourself?

Some of this stuff really hits home for me, especially the whole “success isn’t numbers” thing. We hear that alot, but as pastors, that’s a hard one to swallow.

Lost…the best show on T.V.?

27 02 2008

I’m a big Lost fan. I’m relieved that the writers strike is over….I was getting worried there for a while. Scott McClellan, editor of Collide magazine also considers Lost to be the best show on tv.

Here are his reasons

The story is key—Although the show has occasionally involved explosions, car chases, gunplay, and fist fights, those things are not what Lost is about. Instead, viewers are watching a huge narrative play itself out. The episodes and seasons are mini-narratives that comprise the overarching story of the island and its inhabitants. And that overarching story, so far, has been unlike anything we’ve ever seen on TV.

Nobody’s perfect—As the Losties’ backstories have been revealed, and as we’ve watched them interact on the island for 90 days, one thing is clear: there are no perfect people in the Lost universe. Isn’t that refreshing? In most episodic television, the characters are too good and things work out too well. Any character flaws are only skin deep, which allows them to patched up in a 30-minute episode. Real life just isn’t that way, which is part of why Lost resonates with its viewers.

Anything is possible—Redemption for sinners, polar bears in the jungle, and cancer in remission are just a few of the unlikely realities on Lost island. It’s really cool to watch a show that takes place in a world where conventional wisdom doesn’t always apply. In fact, rational science can’t explain everything that takes place on the show, which leads us into …

The supernatural—A lot of shows on TV dismiss the supernatural entirely (especially those courtroom dramas we love so much). Some other shows embrace the supernatural, but in a laughable way (think Touched By an Angel, Joan of Arcadia, The Ghost Whisperer, etc.). Lost’s acknowledgment of supernatural phenomena is creepy, suspenseful, and brilliant. Plus, it reminds us that for all its boasting, Big Science isn’t an omniscient monopoly.

Layers—Sure, Lost is pretty wide (it has characters and storylines out the wazzoo), but it’s also deep. Every character and event has multiple layers to it. That makes for pretty engaging entertainment, but it also might help us to stop reducing everything and everyone to a soundbyte. As it turns out, soundbytes rarely tell the whole story.

Mystery—When did the human race become so obsessed with overturning every rock and solving every mystery? Sure, it’s good to discover cures for diseases and new species of wildlife, but we need to learn to live with and appreciate the mysteries of life. Why do things happen the way the do? How do things happen the way they do? We don’t know, and nowhere is that more evident than Lost message boards.

Everything and everyone is connected—We tend to believe that people float in and out of our lives without consequence, but in reality, we’re all connected. Did you know that millionaire Hurley owned the box factory Locke worked in? Did you know Locke did some work (I think it was a home inspection) for Sayid’s long-lost love, Nadia? Lost often reminds us that we are all connected, and that the people around us are important in our personal stories and the bigger story we all find ourselves in.

It’s finally that time again!!!!

I’m a baseball nut, and today is the first day of spring training games! The period between the Super Bowl and the first day of S.T. games is the worst sports time of the year. I am so sick of there being 8 pages of the paper dedicated to basketball. Ughh. Let’s go O’s!

An exciting time to be at The Journey Church!

26 02 2008

Our church basically had to relaunch back in September. We moved days, locations, changed staff, changed the name and lost and gained some people. It has been and I’m sure will be a rollercoaster ride, but one I’m loving to death. You know, I’m deathly afraid of heights, but I love rollercoasters. I feel sick when I’m waiting in line, I’m sweating, heart pounding the whole time….but even though sometimes I have to force myself to ride, I’m always glad I did. The Church is like that. Sometimes the ride is exciting, sometimes it’s nauseating, sometimes it’s a mountain-top, sometimes it’s a valley. I’m so glad to be on that ride with Robby, John and everyone at The Journey Church. It’s so exciting that not a Saturday night goes by that we don’t have new people checking us out. Many of them have stayed, some haven’t, but it’s so exciting to be reaching new people! If you haven’t checked us out, visit our website, get directions and come on out!

Currently reading…

26 02 2008

revolutionary.jpgrobbellsexgod.jpg

I have a serious book addiction. It’s an ADD thing! I have been known to read about 10 books at the same time. Right now though (thanks to Adderall) I’m chewing on these two. The Revolutionary Communicator by Jedd Medefind and Erik Lokkesmoe and Sex God by Rob Bell. If you have any comments on these books or you want to know where you can get them, make a comment.

Smellmylife??? What the…?

26 02 2008

My e-mail and blog titles are usually great conversation starters. Some of you might just think it’s just me being weird (which I am!), but it has a spiritual meaning. It’s based on 2 Corinthians 2:15-16. Oddly enough my sister Leslie is writing a devotional book and sent me this chapter from it, which sums it up pretty well.

Spiritual Body Odor

My teenage daughter, Stephanie, came to me one day in tears. She felt overwhelmed with rejection from a group of kids at school. She is so burdened in her heart for them – and has been praying for them for years. These are kids she used to hang around a lot, but recently she has not been around them because they have been making wrong decisions, leaving their faith and getting into things they promised they never would.

It’s heartbreaking when your children are suffering. But when they suffer for the sake of the gospel, there is heartbreak mixed with blessing beyond measure. I prayed under my breath as she finished pouring her heart out to me. She wondered why they didn’t like to be around her anymore. She wondered why her presence guaranteed a majority of them would clear the room. How could they treat my baby like this? Can’t they see how what a beautiful, pure heart she has? Can’t they see how much she loves them?

That’s when it hit me. It was almost immediate. 2 Corinthians 2:15-16! I immediately grabbed my Bible that I had read just minutes before she approached me. I was in that particular chapter and had underlined those verses. They were so fresh in my mind I could have quoted them, but I wanted her to read it for herself.

She was still crying as she read “For we are the God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life”. She looked up from the page and said “What’s that mean, mom?”.

I said “Well, this verse tells us that when you walk in a room, people who do not know Christ find you offensive – sort of a ‘spiritual body odor’ that makes them cringe. I told her that it was actually a good thing, though. As offensive as she is to them, it’s only because they are feeling convicted. Their conviction was not because of anything she did or said specifically, but because of Whose she is. God, on the other hand, thinks she is the fragrance of life! He is enamored with her – and her prayers and praises are like incense to Him.

That people were finding her hard to be around was not such a bad thing. Jesus said we will be persecuted when we follow him. Jesus also said the world will hate us because of Him. And Paul told the Galatians in chapter 1, verse 10 that he was not trying to please men, but God only. He said if he were trying to please men, he would not be a servant of Christ.

My daughter’s face lit up. She realized how alive scripture is at that moment. It was so relevant, so real to her. And it was as if the Lord was speaking directly to her heart. She let go of her pain, and realizing the importance of her witness, she was free to be herself without putting expectations on others for her happiness.

Are you experiencing any persecution in your life? Are there people in your life who don’t seem to want to be around you anymore? If so, take heart - You are the fragrance of life to the Lord! In John 15:20 Jesus said “If they persecuted me, they will persecute you!”. Consider it all joy – God is obviously working in your life if it’s “offensive” enough for people to notice!

2 Corinthians 2:15-16 “For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such task?”

So much time wasted

25 02 2008

Perry Noble of Newspring Church in Anderson, South Carolina recently led a session at the C3 conference. Something he said really made me think. He said if you are preaching or working for a church that you would not otherwise attend, WHY? I have so many talented friends in the ministry who are at churches that they would not choose to attend if they weren’t on staff. They are to afraid to step out, I guess. Too afraid to stop collecting that paycheck and to pursue the dream that God has really put in their heart. Instead they keep on keeping on, trying so hard to bring about change in churches that don’t want to change, leading under leaders without integrity and trying to justify it in their minds and hearts. So much time is being wasted that could be used furthering the Kingdom, I know…I was one of those guys for about 10 years…it feels good to be free. Don’t tell my church this, but I’d do this thing for free!

The Stupidest Leadership Mistakes I’ve made

25 02 2008

Over on Tim Steven’s blog he wrote about some of the mistakes that he has made in the past with his leadership. A couple of them really struck a chord with me.

1. Putting projects before people. It is so easy for me some times to get so focused on the task at hand that I fail to stop and build what’s most important….relationships.

2. Trying to fix the problem rather than the process. It’s like covering a gapping wound with a Snoopy band-aid. So many church leaders wonder why things never change at their church. It’s because of this. Systems aren’t in place that allow for change.

3. Delegating tasks instead of responsibility. Instead of petty things to check off a list, give people ownership. Allow them to lead big and allow them to fail big.

The hardest thing I’ll ever do….

21 02 2008

Without question, growing a church is the hardest thing that I’ll ever do. It is very rewarding, but sometimes it is a long winding road and can get frustrating. I’ve got to remember that you can grow a church without God, and sometimes that’s what alot of pastors slip into. If we just advertise enough, it’ll grow! Or, if I’m the best speaker they’ll come. Truth is….I don’t want a church of 5,000 if God’s not in it. God help me to learn well what it is you are teaching me through the frustrating times.

Here I go again!

15 02 2008

Well, we are well into 2008 and one of my new years resolutions is to blog more. So, I’ve got a little bit of a late start but I will be blogging much more often from now on (as if you care).
